Process & results

What is vapor blasting, and how is it different from sandblasting?

Vapor blasting suspends fine media in water, so it lifts oxidation, fuel residue and baked-on staining while preserving the original casting texture. Dry media blasting is more aggressive — it pits surfaces and can alter tolerances.

The result is a clean, uniform satin finish that looks factory-correct, without removing base material or opening up critical clearances.

What does the finished surface look like?

An even, satin, factory-correct surface — we preserve cast texture rather than polishing it away. See the Results gallery for real examples across engine cases, carbs, covers and assemblies.

How does a part move through the shop?

Four steps, no shortcuts:

  • Assess & mask — inspect condition; protect threads, bores and critical mating surfaces.
  • Vapor blast — media suspended in water lifts oxidation and contamination edge to edge.
  • Rinse & passivate — stabilize the fresh metal surface and prevent flash oxidation.
  • Inspect & return — final finish check, then packaged for pickup or protected return shipping.

The full walkthrough lives on the Finishing page.

Parts & prep

What parts and materials do you work with?

Restoration-grade aluminum work is our core: motorcycle and automotive engine cases, carburetors and intake, covers, housings and brackets, and precision assemblies. We also do precision cleaning prep for rebuilt or aging aluminum before machining.

How should I prepare parts before sending them in?
  • Bare parts, disassembled. Engines should arrive as separated cases and covers, not whole.
  • No bearings, seals or electronics. Remove anything that shouldn't get wet or blasted — we'll flag anything we spot.
  • Photos help everything. Clear shots of condition let us quote accurately and spot problem areas early.
  • Pack like it matters. Good padding protects fragile fins and mating surfaces in transit.
Is there anything you can't blast?

We work bare metal components only. Remove bearings, seals, gaskets and electronics first. If we spot something on arrival that shouldn't be blasted, we'll flag it before going any further.

Do you accept painted or coated parts?

Yes — painted and coated parts are accepted, but stripping the existing coating before blasting adds to the cost. If you're able to strip any paint or coating beforehand, we recommend doing so to keep the quote lower and the turnaround faster.

When in doubt, send photos with your estimate request and we'll advise on the best approach.

Shipping & drop-off

Do I have to be in Brooklyn?

No. Local work is handled by drop-off in Red Hook, but a growing share of parts arrive by mail and courier. We regularly receive components from across the region and return them packed to survive the trip back. Coverage includes NYC & boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island, and regional shops via freight.

How does shipping work, start to finish?
  • Request an estimate — send photos and a quick description of the parts and platform.
  • Pack to our guidance — we provide disassembly & packaging instructions so parts arrive safe.
  • We blast & finish — restoration-grade work on a fast cycle relative to the industry.
  • Back in your hands — inspected, protected and shipped back ready to reassemble.
Do I need an appointment, or can I just drop off?

We work by appointment for drop-off and pickup in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Reach out first through the estimate form or by phone so we can schedule you in.

Pricing & turnaround

How much does it cost?

Every job is quoted on the part — complexity, condition and volume all move the number. We don't publish flat rates because two parts that look similar can be very different jobs.

Send photos and a quick description through the estimate form and we'll come back with a real range, not a guess.

How long does it take?

Turnaround depends on the part and the current queue, but a fast cycle relative to the industry is part of why customers come back. Every quote includes an honest turnaround estimate — and we tell you up front if something will take longer.

How do I get a quote?

Use the estimate form — tell us about the parts and platform, whether you'll drop off or ship, and add a few photos. You can also call 646·389·0094.
